Software Engineer  

We are seeking an entry level Software Engineer to join the Wisr team! Working on the engineering team, you’ll build and ship features that will be used by students, alumni, and staff at many universities across the US.

The Software Engineer will:

• You’ll work on databases (PostgresSQL & Redis) and system services and APIs (Python, Django, Django REST Framework).
• You’ll work closely with a cross-functional team of engineers and customer managers.
• You’ll design and ship product features and updates in Wisr, from the requirements phase through QA and maintenance. You’ll own what you build and have a chance to iterate on it over time.
• You have a commitment to collaborative problem solving, sophisticated design, and quality product.

Front-End Software Engineer  

We are seeking an entry level Front-End Engineer to join the Wisr team and take ownership of the web application on the frontend. Working on the engineering team, you’ll build and ship features that will be used by students, alumni, and staff at many universities across the US.

The Front-End Software Engineer will:

• You’ll work with a cross-functional team of engineers and business leaders to implement develop, debug, and test software on a variety of platforms including web, and iOS that integrate with our cloud SaaS infrastructure.
• You’ll embrace open source frameworks and libraries such as React and React Native.
• Achieve excellent project execution results by actively participating in our 6-week product cycles.
• You’ll implement and promote best practices and web standards while striving to achieve and maintain high levels of accessibility compliance
• Contribute to designing and building ideal customer journeys and UX with your technical contribution including an ability to understand how individual features and changes impact the overall product offering strategy.
• You’ll help make the product better!

Naomi brings more than 20 years of experience helping build great companies as a strategic partner within a global environment. As a vice-president of sales and marketing in the educational technology space, she has worked with many major entities, ranging from the development of small, little-known companies with significant growth opportunities to building new brands at major corporations. When not hard at work, you’ll find Naomi either buried in a good mystery novel or in her kitchen baking; where she lays claim to the best hummingbird cake recipe ever made.

As our head of Customer Success, Christine leads her team in helping customers build vibrant, thriving communities for their students and alumni. Over the past decade Christine has helped many companies build and grow their customer-facing teams and is driven by seeing customers reach and exceed their goals. Outside of work she spends time chasing after her crazy toddlers, trying new recipes, and making music.

Kris is a software creator, serial entrepreneur, and has developed software professionally for 20 years. He has a passion for creating great software products and has served as the lead engineer and founder for several of them. At Wisr, he leads the product and engineering teams and works to deliver exceptional value to university customers and constituents. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family, the peaks and (many) valleys of following Cleveland sports teams, and smoking great BBQ.

John is a serial entrepreneur with over a decade of education and enrollment technology experience. While studying music in college (he is a jazz pianist), he founded a startup to manage online video auditions with two classmates. That startup evolved into the firm DecisionDesk, which worked with over 100 university enrollment teams and earned the founders Bloomberg’s 30 Under 30. At Wisr, he oversees company operations, and is passionate about focusing the entire team on amazing customer outcomes. At home, John loves to spend time with his wife and two boys, cooking, and playing Radiohead piano covers.

Kate has spent her career working in higher education and higher education technology. She began as an undergraduate admissions officer at the University of Chicago reading and reviewing applications, planning major open houses and yield programs, and upgrading the visitor experience. Today she translates those experiences and sets the strategy for how Wisr supports colleges and universities making the shift to hybrid enrollment and recruitment models. She has earned her BA and MBA from the University of Chicago. In her spare time, she enjoys woodworking, cooking, and mentoring.

Support for recent graduates who are exploring careers or searching for jobs

The challenge

Career support often disappears as soon as a student graduates, leaving young alumni to fend for themselves.

How Wisr can help

Denison implemented a program called Design Your Next Five in which young alumni set five-year goals and select a team of “life advisors” to help them reach those goals. Wisr provided the infrastructure that participants use to find and contact the advisors. Young alumni can search for advisors using criteria like undergraduate major, industry, employer, job title, location, and volunteer items. When they find someone of interest, it’s easy to reach out with a direct message or a request for a call, complete with an agenda builder. Participants also join a private Design Your Next Five community for access to relevant articles, webinars, and events.

Tips for landing jobs and internships plus job opportunities from alumni

The challenge

Juniors, seniors, and young alumni are competing for increasingly competitive jobs and internships, but college curriculum rarely addresses career readiness.

How Wisr can help

Career development administrators decided to host workshops on three topics: resume and cover letter writing, networking, and interviewing. During the workshops, trained advisors gave students in-person feedback on their resumes and interviewing skills. To provide ongoing support, the advisors and students who met at the workshops received invites to join a community in WisrConnect where they could continue to exchange resume drafts and feedback. Meanwhile, administrators could offer exclusive access to events and resources for workshop attendees through the community.

Resources and discussions to help first-gen students overcome barriers

The challenge

First-gen and low-income students must overcome challenges like little parental guidance, financial burdens, imposter syndrome, and balancing schoolwork with jobs and families.

How Wisr can help

UChicago used WisrConnect to facilitate a program to match first-gen students with alumni mentors from similar backgrounds. Having faced and overcome some of the same barriers, the alumni mentors are perfectly prepared to walk students through similar challenges. Beyond mentorship, the program provides communities where members from similar backgrounds can talk one-on-one or join forum-style Q&A discussions.

Long-term mentors to help student-athletes manage time and explore careers

The challenge

Student-athletes face unique challenges like managing schoolwork on top of demanding practice schedules and demonstrating the value of their experience while applying for jobs and internships.

How Wisr can help

Student success administrators created a program to match student-athletes with alumni mentors on Denison’s WisrConnect platform. Participants and their mentors were to touch base twice a semester to set goals and talk about progress. Recognizing that the first conversation can be intimidating, Denison used WisrConnect to suggest check-in agendas and topics of conversation. To make sure students got the most out of the program, Wisr automatically tracked when pairs were connecting and sent reminder emails when they were overdue for a check-in. As more students have joined the program, Wisr has run quarterly reports measuring how long pairs spend talking and the outcomes for students in the program.

Resources plus Q&A for prospective students and parents during admissions

The challenge

Prospective students and parents don’t always have reliable sources to turn to with questions about admissions. Underserved applicants like first-gen and low-income students face even more barriers than peers. On top of the usual stress of applications, these students must overcome challenges like little parental guidance, financial burdens associated with application fees, and balancing applications with jobs.

How Wisr can help

A network for prospective students and parents lets you provide better support during the admissions process. You can create Q&A communities mediated by trained admissions volunteers to answer prospective students’ questions like

Where should I live on campus?
Which meal plan makes the most sense?
How hard is my major?

and parents’ questions like

What financial aid options are available?
How is the job outlook for graduates?
What safety precautions should students take?

Meanwhile, students with specific needs can get more specialized resources. First-gen students, for example, can take advantage of advisors trained to help with navigating the red tape surrounding applications. Minority students can find information about scholarships they’re eligible for.

Professional support for women staff and faculty in higher education

The challenge

Throughout our conversations with over 300 institutions that have worked with us or attended a Wisr summit, we’ve observed that women are glaringly underrepresented in upper-level positions in higher ed. The research agrees. According to the American Council on Education, only 30% of university presidents are women, and only 5% are women of color.

How Wisr can help

To drive conversations about this underrepresentation, Wisr launched a ten-city summit series called HIGHER. The series gathered outstanding women who work in higher education to address challenges like finding mentorship and advancing above the glass ceiling. A pattern began to emerge: women in higher education benefit when they can connect with women who’ve had similar experiences. To facilitate more of these connections, Wisr provides networks for professional development for women staff and faculty. WisrConnect provides infrastructure for intersection communities like:
